SS Sandbox Stables Riding lessons for all ages

About the school

The people
and the horses.

A small yard, a settled string of school horses, and instructors who teach because they like teaching.

Who you will be riding with

Dressage

Claire Whitmore

Claire teaches flatwork the way a good editor reads a sentence — she finds the one thing that will improve everything else, and starts there. She is at her best with riders who have plateaued and cannot see why. Expect to spend a whole lesson on your seat, and to be glad you did.

Jumping

Tom Farrar

Tom coaches jumping with an unusual amount of patience for a discipline that rewards nerve. He builds courses that flatter the rider and then quietly raises them. If you are frightened of jumping, he is the person to see; if you are too confident about it, he is also the person to see.

Children's lessons

Nina Okafor

Nina has the rare knack of being firm about safety without ever making the yard feel serious. Her riders learn to muck out and pick feet before they learn to trot, on the theory that a child who can look after a pony is never frightened of one. Parents are welcome to watch from the rail.

A tour of the yard

Come early for your first lesson and someone will show you round properly before you get on.

The yard is built around a floodlit outdoor arena with an all-weather surface, so lessons run through the winter and into the evening. A smaller indoor school takes the beginners and the nervous, out of the wind and away from an audience.

Our horses live out in company through the summer and come in at night through the worst of the winter. There is a tack room you are welcome to use, a heated viewing area for parents, and safe parking a short walk from the arena.
