Whether this is your very first horse show or your first one with us, take a breath — you're in good hands. The world of A-rated shows can feel like a lot at first: new vocabulary, new faces, and a schedule that seems to change by the hour. This guide is the short version. It covers what actually matters for your family: what a show weekend looks like, how the costs break down, and what EquiPoint handles for you so you don't have to.

The Rhythm

What a show weekend looks like

Most EquiPoint shows run as a full week on the showgrounds, with riders competing on Saturday and Sunday. Your horse and the team travel down earlier in the week to settle in, school, and prepare — you and your rider typically only need to be there for the days they're actually showing.

At the show, riders compete in divisions (a group of 3–4 classes for a similar age or skill level). Placings earn points toward Champion and Reserve Champion for the division, and those points also count toward year-end awards through USEF and USHJA.

Schedules and class times can shift during the week, sometimes last-minute. Your trainer will keep you posted, and a pre-show text with the need-to-know details goes out the week of the show.

Full-Service

We handle it — before, during, and after

You don't lift a finger. Your horse travels to the showgrounds days before you and your rider arrive. Our grooms and trainers are already on-site bathing, braiding, tacking, and conditioning — getting your horse settled, calm, and ring-ready before you ever get there.

We also handle the heavy lifting on-site: setting up the barn and stalls, decorating for the week, and building out the client lounge area so families have a comfortable place to relax between classes. When the show wraps, we break it all down, then pack and unpack everything back at the home barn.

When you arrive, your only job is to show up ready to ride — bring your rider, and their show clothes.

Already Covered

Your weekly lessons carry over

Any lesson time your rider has during the week automatically transfers into warm-up ring time at the show. You're already paying for that riding time as part of your regular lesson schedule, so it isn't billed again — it simply shifts from the home ring to the show's warm-up ring.

Local shows make a real difference here: a show like the one at Texas Rose Horse Park in Tyler, TX typically lands on the lower end of these ranges, since horse travel and staff lodging cost less when the show is close to home. Tyler and Katy, TX (home to the Great Southwest Equestrian Center) are both excellent choices for a first horse show.

Paid separately, directly to the horse show office: entry and class fees, generally $500–$1,200 per week depending on how many classes your rider enters. A blank check or card stays on file with the show office weekly (a 15% convenience fee applies if the barn has to cover these on your behalf).

If your horse wins prize money: EquiPoint keeps 50% of winnings when the trainer is in the irons, or 30% when your rider is competing, plus a required 10% groom gratuity out of your share. Your trainer can walk you through specifics for your horse.

Annual memberships

A few memberships are required to show and are billed to you directly, not through EquiPoint. They're annual and renew each year:

Before You Leave

What to pack — the essentials

Your horse's gear is covered by our full-service grooming. For your rider, pack:

Show coat (navy or black) and a long-sleeve show shirt
Breeches (tan) and tall boots or paddock boots with half chaps
Helmet, gloves, and a belt
Hairnet or bows, depending on age
Rain jacket and a warm layer for early mornings or cool evenings
Comfortable shoes for walking the showgrounds between classes

Standards

Dress code

EquiPoint is known as one of the most polished barns on the circuit, and we want every family to reflect that same standard at the showgrounds. A sharp, put-together appearance reflects well on your rider, your horse, and our whole barn — please hold to these standards every time you're on the showgrounds.

Riders

In the ring

A show jacket (navy or black — mesh in summer, solid in winter) over a long-sleeve show shirt, always, regardless of weather. Tan breeches, tall boots (or paddock boots and half chaps), gloves, a properly fitted helmet, and hair neatly secured in a hairnet or bows. Boots clean and polished, jackets pressed — sharp turnout is part of representing EquiPoint. Younger or newer riders often show in jodhpurs with paddock boots and garters instead of tall boots — that's completely normal, and expected as they grow. Riders may change into show clothes once they arrive at the showgrounds; until then, please follow the spectator dress code.

Ringside

Smart casual, country-club attire — our families' polish extends to the rail, not just the ring. No tank tops, short shorts, spaghetti straps, or other revealing clothing. Closed-toe shoes are required, and collared shirts are appreciated for dads and other adult supporters.

Ringside & barn safety

For everyone's safety — yours, your rider's, and the horses' — please follow these ground rules at every show.

Around the Ring

Stay seated and quiet during rounds; save the applause for after
Never talk to or distract a mounted rider, especially while they're studying their course
Silence your phone and avoid sudden noise or movement near horses

Around the Horses

Don't offer a horse a treat if a rider is mounted or the horse is wearing a bridle
If a mounted rider needs water, every in-gate has ringside water on hand — please don't hand a rider a water bottle until they're clear of the gate or staging area

Restricted Areas

Parents aren't permitted at the in-gates or in the horse staging area — this is for your own safety
Spectators should stay in designated observation areas
Don't park golf carts near the stalls
Store backpacks and personal items in the client storage room — not on chairs, in the barn aisle, or underfoot

Everyday Courtesy

Riders are responsible for cleaning up after themselves; a $50/day fee applies if our team has to pick up trash or food left behind
Don't approach, correct, or discipline a child who isn't your own
Route any questions or concerns to your trainer — never a judge
Schedules can change without notice, so please prepare family and guests ahead of time
